 1   Clock Tower

Museum visit and clock mechanism. Raised in the 14th century as the citadel’s gateway tower, the Clock Tower is Sighisoara’s unmistakable symbol and one of the best-preserved medieval towers in Europe. Its name comes from the astronomical clock installed in 1648, whose mechanisms continue to mark the time to this day. From the top of its 64 metres, the view over the citadel and the Tarnava Mare valley is one of the most beautiful in Transylvania. Inside, the history museum houses medieval weapons, period documents and scale models that reconstruct life in the city over the past centuries.

 2   Scholars’ Stairs & Church on the Hill

We climb the 175 covered steps, with a panoramic view over the city. Built in 1642 from oak wood, the Scholars’ Stairs have 175 steps covered by a sloping roof that sheltered the pupils who climbed daily to the school and church on the hill. For centuries, the same path was walked by the generations of Saxons who formed Sighisoara’s cultural soul.

 3   Vlad Dracul House

An apparently ordinary medieval house, with a yellow facade and narrow windows, conceals behind it one of history’s most controversial births. Here, around the year 1431, Vlad II Dracul is believed to have been born — the voivode whose son, Vlad the Impaler, became the inspiration for the Dracula myth. The house functions today as a restaurant and small museum, and its atmosphere retains something of the particular density that belongs to places where history and legend touch.

 4   House of the Guilds & House of Arms and Maps

The House of the Guilds hosts an exhibition of tools, equipment and machinery used over 100 years ago by Saxon craftsmen from Sighisoara and the surrounding area. All exhibits are authentic, allowing visitors to admire the skill and tenacity the Saxons showed in crafting equipment and tools using the technologies of their time. The House of Arms and Maps is a private collection bringing together and showcasing an impressive number of maps, engravings, drawings and lithographs, as well as one of the largest collections of antique books in Transylvania.
