1 Cluj’s Legendary Cinemas
Stops at the sites of the legendary cinema halls – stories of banned films, hand-painted posters and clandestine screenings. Cinema Republica, known today as Cinema Florin Piersic, and Cinema Arta are two key landmarks in Cluj’s cinematic memory. Republica is remembered by generations as the hall of the big premieres and of the films that brought the whole city together. Cinema Arta, opened in 1913, keeps the quiet charm of arthouse cinema and is considered the oldest cinema in Romania still in operation. Together, these two places tell of a Cluj that loved film not only as a spectacle, but as a meeting place, an emotion and a story.
