2 Issa Winery – Lunch and Wine Tasting
Winery tour and tasting of ISSA wines with the Dealurile Transilvaniei geographical indication, followed by lunch overlooking the vineyard on the Durgău Hills. A vineyard replanted since 2011 on the Durgău terraces, a stone’s throw from the salt mine, in an area where vines have been grown since Roman times — hence the name, from Potaissa. It covers some 41 hectares under the “Dealurile Transilvaniei” geographical indication and produces both classic varieties (Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Fetească Neagră) and a few conversation pieces: an orange Chardonnay, a traditional-method (champenoise) sparkling wine and an icewine.
↓ Turda → Rimetea | ~35 km | ~50 min
3 Rimetea (Torockó)
A stroll among the white, green-shuttered houses at the foot of Piatra Secuiului and a visit to the ethnographic museum in the village centre. An iron-mining village whose craftsmen were brought from Upper Austria as early as the 13th century; the blend of Székely and German cultures gave it its unique character. The white houses with green shutters are not medieval – they date from after the fire of 1870, when the village was rebuilt in a unified neoclassical style. In 1999 it won the Europa Nostra award for restoring 138 houses – some still bear the medal. Above the village towers Piatra Secuiului, the mountain that makes the sun seem to rise twice in summer – a morning sight, so a story for our afternoon stop.
