Today, we continue our journey in search of treasures. The Oravița-Anina narrow-gauge railway route is like a fairytale. Beyond the stunning mountain scenery, the viaducts along the way are truly impressive. Construction of the Oravița-Anina railway began in 1861. The construction was extremely challenging for the engineers of the time, given the fact that it was a mountain route in the western Banat Mountains. The route spans 33.4 km, comprising 14 tunnels and 10 viaducts. Despite the difficulties, the project was completed in nearly three years. Consequently, the Oravița-Anina railway was inaugurated on December 13, 1863, as the first mountain railway in Romania. This railway is the oldest in Southeast Europe and was originally built to transport ore. Due to its resemblance to the first mountain railway in Europe, the Semmering Railway in Austria, Romania’s railway was nicknamed the “Banat Semmering.”
After the scenic train ride, we head to Bigăr Waterfall, located on the Miniș Valley in the Banat Mountains. It’s hard to imagine a more perfect setting for this waterfall, as it seems that all of nature came together to create and host extraordinary beauty here.
The waterfall is situated precisely where Romania is crossed by the 45th Parallel North, a significant geographical marker that also helps locate it on DN 57B. Bigăr Waterfall stands out from other waterfalls with its unique appearance, created by the ever-green moss that wraps around it, intertwined with the crystal-clear waters of the spring cascading into the turquoise Miniș River.
From here, the journey continues to the Water Mills on the Rudăria Gorges in Caraș-Severin. The beauty of nature and human ingenuity combine to create a unique place with 22 scoop-wheel water mills, remarkable for their landscape, flora, archaic architecture, legends, and stories. The allure of these water mills lies in the legends surrounding each mill, their traditional operation, and the wild scenery of the area.
Strung like a necklace of beads along the river over a 3 km stretch, both within and outside the village, the mills harness the modest energy potential of the Rudăria River. This is achieved through an ingenious hydro-energy and structural design that reflects great expertise and “engineering” skill, despite the river’s minimal elevation difference.
