1 Alba Carolina Citadel – Alba Iulia
Walking tour of approximately 3 hours – The largest bastion fortress in Romania, built by the Austrians between 1715 and 1738 in the Vauban system, with seven star-shaped bastions and baroque gates — the Third Gate, topped by an equestrian statue of Charles VI, is the most spectacular. It was built over the camp of the 13th Legion Gemina and over the medieval fortress, so a single tour takes you through almost two thousand years of fortifications. Inside are St. Michael’s Cathedral, where John Hunyadi (Iancu de Hunedoara) is buried, and the Coronation Cathedral, built in 1921–1922 for the coronation of King Ferdinand and Queen Marie, as well as the Union Hall, where the union of Transylvania with Romania was voted on 1 December 1918. The walls have been fully restored over the past fifteen years.
