This is more than a ride, it’s a deep dive into the soul of the Carpathians, built for those who believe that the best way to see the world is from behind the handlebars.

Itinerary:

1. Bistrita

Leaving the Cluj plateau, you stop in the medieval center of Bistrița. It’s the last of the seven historical Saxon citadels of Transylvania. Grab a coffee under the shadow of the Evangelical Church tower (the highest stone tower in Transylvania) before the road begins to climb.

2. The Tihuța Pass

This is the highlight of the morning. You’ll ride the wide, high-speed serpentines made famous by Bram Stoker’s Dracula, who placed Dracula’s castle on this pass naming it Borgo Pass. The pass is home to Dracula’s castle; a hotel built during communist time to attract tourism in the area.

3. The Pearl of Bukovina: Vatra Dornei & The Painted Monasteries (Moldovița & Sucevița)

As you descend into the land of Bukovina, you stop at this historic spa town. It’s nestled in a mountain basin where the Dorna and Bistrița rivers meet. It is the perfect place for a riverside lunch before the “Monastery Loop” begins.

Leaving the main road, you tackle the Obcina Mare and Obcina Feredeu—the mountain ridges that protect the painted monasteries.

  • Moldovița Monastery: Famous for its massive 16th-century frescoes and fortified walls.
  • Sucevița Monastery: The largest of the UNESCO sites, known for the spectacular “Ladder of Virtue” fresco.

Lunch: Vatra Dornei or Pasul Palma

  • The Dish: “Balmoș” (traditional shepherd’s dish made of cornmeal boiled in sour cream and butter).

4. Pasul Palma & The Mega-Zipline: The Monument of Road Builders

At the top of the pass, you’ll find the Palma Monument, a massive hand pointing to the sky, dedicated to the workers who built this road.

For those seeking an adrenaline rush off the bike, this is home to the longest zipline in Central and Eastern Europe. Fly over the pine forests at speeds of up to 100 km/h for a bird’s-eye view of the landscape you just rode.

5. Marginea: The Black Pottery

Before the final stretch to Suceava, you pass through Marginea, the only place in the world where Black Pottery is still made using ancient Dacian techniques.

6. Motorcycle Exhibition

It’s not just about bikes; it’s about people. It’s the perfect place to swap stories with local riders, see some unique custom builds, and feel the growing energy of the Romanian motorcycle scene.

You finish the day in the historic capital of Moldavia. If time permits, a sunset visit to the Seat Fortress of Suceava (Cetatea de Scaun) provides a grand conclusion to a massive day.

Dinner: Suceava (The Princely Feast)

  • Recommendation: “Ciorbă Rădăuțeană” (the local garlic-and-cream chicken soup) and “Poale-n brâu” (traditional sweet cheese pies).

Itinerary:

1. Voroneț Monastery: The Blue Pearl

Start the morning at the most iconic of the Painted Monasteries. Voroneț is a UNESCO site famous for its unique “Voroneț Blue” pigment and the colossal “Last Judgment” fresco. It’s a peaceful atmosphere to soak in before a long day of riding.

2. Neamț Fortress: The Unconquered Guard

In Târgu Neamț, the road leads to this 14th-century mountain stronghold. Perched on a high ridge, it offers a commanding view of the Moldavian plains. It’s a great spot to stretch your legs and admire the massive stone walls that once defied the Ottoman Empire.

3. Bicaz Gorges (Cheile Bicazului) & Red Lake

This is the technical highlight of the day. You will ride through the Bicaz Gorges, where 300-meter-high limestone cliffs close in on the road, creating one of the most dramatic riding corridors in Europe.

  • Red Lake (Lacu Roșu): Immediately after the canyon, stop at this natural dam lake. You can see the petrified tree trunks emerging from the water hauntingly beautiful natural phenomenon.

Lunch: The Dish: “Gulyas” or “Lángos” (fried dough with garlic and sour cream). This is the perfect region to experience Hungarian-influenced Transylvanian cuisine.

4. Praid & Sovata: The Salt Road

Crossing the ridge back into Transylvania, the landscape opens up. You’ll pass through the Szekler region, famous for its salt mines. The roads around Sovata become rhythmic and flowing, allowing you to enjoy the bike’s handling after the tight canyon corners.

5. Sighișoara: The Living Citadel

You finish the day in the most beautiful, inhabited citadel in Europe. Sighișoara is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the birthplace of Vlad the Impaler. Park the bikes and walk up the 176 covered wooden steps to the Church on the Hill for a perfect sunset view.

  • Riding Time: 3 – 4 hours
  • Max Altitude: 650 m (Transylvanian Plateau)
  • Terrain: 100% paved, Pastoral rolling hills, smooth highway stretches, and a short rustic detour into the heart of the Saxon countryside.

Itinerary:

1. Saschiz: The Blue Tower

Just a short ride from Sighișoara, you stop at the UNESCO village of Saschiz. Its massive Clock Tower, built in the 15th century, is nearly identical to Sighișoara’s. This village is famous for its artisanal rhubarb and wild fruit jams, the perfect spot for a quick morning break in a traditional setting.

2. Viscri: The King’s Retreat

We take a detour off the main road to reach Viscri, perhaps the most famous village in Romania. Preserved with the support of King Charles III, the village feels like a living museum.

What to Experience:

  • Visit the Viscri Fortified Church (UNESCO) and walk the unpaved streets where life moves at the pace of a horse-drawn cart. It is the ultimate Transylvanian time capsule.

3. Rupea Fortress: The Stone Snail

Visible from miles away, perched on a basalt hill, the Rupea Fortress is your next stop. Built in the shape of a spiral (or snail shell), this 14th-century citadel was recently restored and offers one of the best 360-degree panoramic views of the Transylvanian plateau. It is a photographer’s dream and a monumental testament to medieval defense.

4. Prejmer: The Fortress of 272 Rooms

Heading toward the curve of the Carpathians, you reach Prejmer. This is the most powerful fortified church in Eastern Europe. Built by the Teutonic Knights, it features a unique internal honeycomb of 272 rooms designed to shelter every family in the village during a siege. It is an architectural marvel of survival.

6. Bran Castle: The Dracula Myth

You enter the realm of legend. Bran Castle, perched dramatically on a cliff, is the global symbol of Transylvanian Gothic architecture. Even from the saddle of your motorcycle, the sight of the castle guarding the mountain pass is a quintessential Romanian experience.

7. Brașov: The Crown City

The day concludes in Brașov, one of Europe’s most beautiful medieval cities. Nestled at the foot of Mount Tâmpa, the city offers a perfect blend of history and vibrant modern life.

What to do:

  • Explore the Black Church (the largest Gothic structure between Vienna and Istanbul) and enjoy the atmosphere of the Council Square (Piața Sfatului).
  • The Mount Tâmpa Cable Car: Once arrived in Brașov, park the bikes and take the cable car to the top of Mount Tâmpa. From the lookout point, right next to the iconic “BRAȘOV” sign, you have the entire medieval city at your feet—a perfect spot to plan the next day’s route while watching the sunset.
  • Evening at Poiana Brașov: If you still want a bit of “leaning” before dinner, take the 12 km climb to Poiana Brașov.
